DIY Outdoor painted rug

I've been on the hunt for an outdoor rug and most of them are fairly expensive. I ended up ordering this rug from homedepot.com for $16.88+tax and shipping and absolutely love it! The rug is made from 100% post-consumer recycled plastic bottles, so it's an earth-friendly option and it's surprisingly lightweight and soft! The only problem I had with the rug was that it didn't have a border. I came across this post from DIYMaven and I decided to paint a simple border on.

Before (1 plain 8X6 rug):

After (4X6 rugs with a brown border):

Materials Used:
one 8X6 Foss Taupe Hobnail Outdoor Rug from homedepot.com (link)
Scissors
Measuring tape and ruler
pen
Outdoor paint (I used a Valspar half pint from Lowes)
Small paint roller
Masking tape
Newspaper or something to put under the sides of the rug to protect your floor from the paint

Here's how I did it:

1. I decided that I wanted 2 4X6 rugs instead of one 8X6, so I cut the rug in half. I flipped the rug over and measured and marked the halfway point on the two longer sides of the rug. I drew a line as a guide and carefully cut the rug into two 4X6 pieces.

2. I took the first rug piece and taped off the the first side to create a 1 1/4" border. Press the tape down with your hand to ensure that the tape is stuck to the rug and evenly applied (no bubbes!) You can tape all 4 sides at once if you'd like but I like doing it one side at a time.

3. Put some newspaper under the sides of the rug so that your floor is protected from the paint. Using a small roller apply an outdoor paint to the rug. You will need to apply several coats to get a dark border.

4. Once you've finished that side, slowly remove peel the tape off and throw it out. Repeat steps 2 and 3 on the other 3 sides and on the other rug and let the paint dry for atleast a day.

You're finished! Total Cost for two 4X6 rugs= $26.17 ($21.70 Rug w/ tax and shipping +$4.47 Paint)

This rug will be part of Project Patio, part 1 (coming soon!)

  1. Awesome, just been shopping for a rug for our deck! I might adapt this one. By the way, have you done window treatments before, and do you have any tips on that?

  2. I love that this rug is made out of plastic bottles too! I made a simple border, but check out this post from DIYMaven: http://diymaven.com/2009/01/02/how-to-paint-and-indooroutdoor-rug/
She made a designed border. You could also use a stencil and create a pattern, or a freehand design if you have the skills :)

I haven't really sewn any window treatments on that but I did make cornice boxes for our deck door and windows. I'll post that up soon so you can check it out :)

  4. One of the differences is that antique rugs should not look like they were used at all and just viewed as art. Also, rugs are stepped and walked on as opposed to art which is only viewed. rugs

  15. Therefore, art will always look newer and last longer. It is amazing that some antique Rug will cost less than an actual new rug. However, there is a misconception that antique rugs cost more than new rugs.
